The Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics in Garching near Munich joined the SDSS as an Associate Partner at the beginning of 2001. The MPA is primarily a theoretical institute with a tradition of forefront supercomputer simulation of astrophysical systems (stars, supernovae, jets, galaxies, large-scale structure...). Particular interests within the SDSS are the structure and spectra of galaxies, the structure of the Milky Way, and galaxy clusters.
