The Max Planck Institute for Astronomy (MPIA) in Heidelberg, Germany, joined the SDSS collaboration in early 1999 as an associate partner. MPIA is contributing observing time for follow-up studies through its facilities at Calar Alto Observatory and other telescopes. MPIA may also contribute instrumentation for future extensions of the SDSS project. Two staff members at MPIA as well as five students and postdocs are currently involved in SDSS research and collaborations with other SDSS partners. Research areas include high-redshift quasars, gravitational lenses, low-surface-brightness galaxies, and Galactic structure. Participants from MPIA:
