The Max Planck
Institute for Astronomy (MPIA) in Heidelberg, Germany, joined the SDSS
collaboration in early 1999 as an associate partner. MPIA is contributing
observing time for follow-up studies through its facilities at
Calar Alto Observatory
and other telescopes. MPIA may also contribute instrumentation for future
extensions of the SDSS project. Two staff members at MPIA as well as five
students and postdocs are currently involved in SDSS research and
collaborations with other SDSS partners. Research areas include
high-redshift quasars, gravitational lenses, low-surface-brightness
galaxies, and Galactic structure.
