Targeting Catalog

Name: MaNGA_targets_extNSA_tiled_ancillary.fits

This is the final FITS binary table produced by the targeting pipeline and contains all the targeting information used for plate design. It also contains information that may be useful for statistical studies of the MaNGA data.

The targeting catalog contains all the targets selected for the Primary, Secondary and Color-Enhanced samples over the full SDSS DR7 footprint, as well as Ancillary targets that have been allocated an IFU. The catalog includes details of each target, such as position, redshift, photometry, stellar mass, size, position angle, mainly taken from the NSA, as well as details of the tiling and IFU allocation.

For the Primary+ and Secondary samples the minimum and maximum redshift at which each galaxies could still have been selected in the sample is given. This provides a simple way to calculate a Vmax style weight to correct back to a volume limited sample (see Wake et al. 2016 for further details).

The Data Model for the MaNGA target file can be found here.

A small fraction of galaxies in the DR13 release are selected using older versions of the sample selection. Some of them also meet the final selection cuts and they can be found in the targeting catalog mentioned above. The others do not meet the final selection cuts and they are not included in this targeting catalog. For statistical studies requiring careful treatment of sample completeness, those galaxies should not be considered. To identify galaxies meeting the final selection cuts, use the MANGA_TARGET1 bitmask, and find all galaxies that have at least one of the bits 10, 11, and 12 set in MANGA_TARGET1. Ancillary program targets can be identified using the MANGA_TARGET3 bitmask. See the Ancillary Target page for details.
