Astra Source and Spectrum Flags

Astra has numerous flag columns, associated with the SDSS-V target selection, with the astronomical sources, with the spectrum, and with the individual pipelines:

  • The target selection flags are in the sdss5_target_flags column, and you should interpret them with the semaphore package.
  • The source, APOGEE Spectrum, and BOSS Spectrum flags are inherited from the targeting catalogs and the APOGEE and BOSS Data Reduction Pipelines. They are propagated to many of the Astra output files, and are described below.
  • The individual pipelines within Astra also produce their own flags, which are described in the documentation for the individual pipelines.

Some of the flags are bitmasks (with many flags contained within a single variable) and others are individual boolean flags (just one flag per variable). The naming convention in Astra is to name a bitmask column in the form of  [something]_flags  and define individual boolean flags as flag_[some_descriptive_name].
