BHM Targeting Cartons

This page provides a complete list of all BHM-led science target cartons that have been considered within SDSS-V, up to and including the DR19 data release. These BHM cartons can be grouped by a ‘targeting generation’ identifier. A targeting generation is simply a well-defined collection of versioned target cartons, which have been used at some point for plate design or as inputs to robostrategy (the FPS survey planning tool).

List of targeting generations

The table below provides a list of all distinct targeting generations presented in this data release. The catalogdb crossmatch plan and tag point to specific versions of the crossmatch code (and control parameters) that were used to generate the underlying catalogdb.catalog table (see here for more details). The robostrategy runs (if any) which used each targeting generation are indicated. The approximate dates when the targeting generation was used for observations at the telescope(s) are indicated.

Targeting generations “v0.5.epsilon-7-core-0”, “v0.5.2”, “v0.5.3” and “v0.5.5”

The table below lists all BHM target cartons that are included in any of the “v0.5.epsilon-7-core-0”, “v0.5.2”, “v0.5.3” and “v0.5.5” targeting generations (used for early FPS planning and operations). Note that BHM target selection did not change across targeting generations “v0.5.2”, “v0.5.3” and “v0.5.5”. A detailed description of each carton is presented lower down this page, which can be navigated to easily by clicking the name of the carton.

Located in 36 mostly disjoint fields within the SDSS QSO footprint that were pre-selected to contain higher than average numbers of bright QSOs and CSC targets. The list of field centres can be found within the target_selection repository.

Summary: A supporting sample of candidate QSOs which have been selected by the Gaia-unWISE AGN catalog (Shu et al., 2019) and/or the SDSS XDQSO catalog (Bovy et al., 2011). These targets are located within five (+1 backup) well known survey fields (SDSS-RM, COSMOS, XMM-LSS, ECDFS, CVZ-S/SEP, and ELIAS-S1).

Select entries satisfying the following criteria: i) NIR counterpart is from the 2MASS catalogue, ii) 2MASS H-band magnitude measurement is not null and in the accepted range for SDSS-V: 7.0<H<14.0. Allocate cadence (exposure time) requests based on H-band magnitude.

Simplified description of selection criteria: Starting from the parent catalogue of CSC sources with optical/IR counterparts (bhm_csc_v2). Select entries satisfying the following criteria: i) optical counterpart is from the PanSTARRS1 or Gaia dr2 catalogues, ii) optical flux/magnitude is in the accepted range for SDSS-V: psfmag_[g,r,i,z]>13.5 AB and non-Null psfmag_i (objects with PanSTARRS1 counterparts); G,RP>13.0 Vega (Gaia DR2 counterparts). Deprioritize targets which already have good quality SDSS spectroscopy. Allocate cadence (exposure time) requests based on optical brightness (PS1 psfmag_i or Gaia G).

bhm_gua_bright

Summary: A sample of optically bright candidate AGN lacking spectroscopic confirmations, derived from the parent sample presented by Shu et al., (2019), who applied a machine-learning approach to select QSO candidates from a combination of the Gaia DR2 and unWISE catalogues.

Simplified description of selection criteria: Starting with the Shu et al., (2019) catalogue, select targets which satisfy the following criteria: i) have a Random Forest probability of being a QSO of>0.8, ii) are in the (dereddened) magnitude range suitable for BOSS spectroscopy in bright time (Gdered>13.0 and RPdered>13.5, as well as Gdered<18.5 or RPdered<18.5, Vega mags), iii) do not have good optical spectroscopic measurements from a previous iteration of SDSS.

bhm_colr_galaxies_lsdr8

Summary: A supplementary magnitude limited sample of optically bright galaxies selected from the legacysurvey.org/dr8 optical/IR imaging catalogue. Selection is based on optical morphology, lack of Gaia DR2 parallax, and several magnitude cuts.

Simplified description of selection criteria: Starting from the legacy_survey_dr8 catalogue (lsdr8), select entries satisfying all of the following criteria: i) lsdr8 morphological type != ‘PSF’, ii) zero or Null parallax in Gaia DR2, iii) dereddened z-band model mag<19.0 AB, and dereddened z-band fiber mag<19.5 AB, and 16<apparent z-band fiber mag<19.0 AB, and apparent r-band fiber mag>16.0 AB, and Gaia G>15.0 Vega, and Gaia RP>15.0 Vega;

bhm_spiders_agn_lsdr8

Summary: This is the highest priority carton for SPIDERS AGN wide area follow up. The carton provides optical counterparts to point-like (unresolved) X-ray sources detected in early reductions of the first 6-months of eROSITA all sky survey data (eRASS:1). The sample is expected to contain a mixture of QSOs, AGN, stars and compact objects. The X-ray sources have been cross-matched by the eROSITA-DE team to legacysurvey.org/dr8 optical/IR counterparts. All targets are located in the sky hemisphere where MPE controls the data rights (approx. 180<l<360 deg). Due to the footprint of lsdr8, nearly all targets in this carton are located at high Galactic latitudes |b|>15 deg.

Simplified description of selection criteria: Starting from a parent catalogue of eRASS:1 point source → legacysurvey.org/dr8 associations (method: NWAY assisted by optical/IR priors computed via a pre-trained Random Forest, building on Salvato et al., 2022), select targets which meet all of the following criteria: i) have eROSITA detection likelihood>6.0, ii) have an X-ray → optical/IR cross-match probability (NWAY) of p_any>0.1, iii) have 13.5<fibertotmag_r<22.5 or 13.5<fibertotmag_z<21.0, iv) are not saturated in legacysurvey imaging, v) have at least one observation in r-band and at least one observation in g- or z-band, vi) if detected by Gaia DR2 then have G>13.5 and RP>13.5 Vega. Simplified description of selection criteria: The basis for our sample is the publicly available 4XMM-DR9 and Swift 2SXPS source catalogs (Webb et al., 2020; Evans et al., 2020). From both catalogs, we select sources with robust, point-like detections in the relevant energy band (4.5-12 keV or 2-10 keV) and exclude sources lying within the Galactic plane (|b|<20deg) or the area corresponding to the LMC, SMC and M31. Details of the construction of a robust, extragalactic serendipitous X-ray sample are given by Delaney et al. (in prep). We further restrict our sample to sources lying within the footprint of the LegacySurvey8 imaging and identify robust optical counterparts using Nway (Salvato et al., 2018). For our final sample, we apply X-ray flux limits of fx>5e-14 erg/cm2/s for sources in the eROSITA-DE (West Galactic) hemisphere, and a higher limit of fxgt;1e-13 erg/cm2/s in the East Galactic hemisphere. These X-ray limits provide well-defined samples with a high fraction of optically bright counterparts (see Figure 2). Finally, we apply magnitude limits of 15.5<sdss_mag_r<21.5 for our dark-time targets (in the eROSITA-DE sky) and 14.5<sdss_mag_r<20.5 for our bright-time targets.

Summary: Quasar Winds: continued monitoring of BAL quasars, already observed in past SDSS surveys.

Simplified description of selection criteria: Our main sample of representative BAL quasars has been drawn from the SDSS Data Release 5 BAL-quasar catalog of Gibson et al. (2009), which contains 5039 BAL quasars spectroscopically identified during SDSS-I/II. From this catalog, we have objectively selected a sample of 2005 BAL quasars that: 1.) Are bright with sdss_mag_i<19.3. We also require i>15 to avoid the possibility of saturation effects (practically, this has minimal effects). Most targets have sdss_mag_i= 17-19.3. 2.) Have high signal-to-noise ratio SDSS-I/II spectra. Specifically, we require the SN1700 parameter from Gibson et al. (2009) to be SN1700>6 when available. 3.) Have clearly detected BAL absorption. Specifically, we require the “balnicity index” from Gibson et al. (2009) to be BI0>100 km/s for at least one BAL trough. This effectively cuts out possible BAL misclassifications owing to, e.g., underlying continuum placement uncertainties. 4.) Have excellent spectral coverage of the CIV, SiIV, MgII, and/or AlIII BAL regions of interest (covering at least outflow velocities of 0 to 25,000 km/s).To accomplish this, we require redshifts of 1.68-4.93 for C IV BALs, 1.96-5.55 for Si IV BALs, 0.48-2.28 for Mg II BALs, and 1.23-3.93 for AlI BALs. If a BAL quasar with troughs from multiple ions satisfies one of these required redshift conditions, then it is accepted.

Summary: ASQOSS: All Bright Quasars: all QSO candidates with WISE-colors & optical information.

Simplified description of selection criteria: ASQOSS is based on a sophisticated target selection approach designed to yield the largest possible sample of quasars, across the entire sky, primarily based on optical-IR photometry (Yang et al., 2017, Shu et al., 2019, Yang et al., 2023). It includes many (c.122k or 29%, at Gaia G<19.5) previously known quasars (i.e., with optical spectroscopy) but is dominated by quasar candidates – targets for which our selection algorithm has yielded a high probability of being quasars. The selection procedure includes the following considerations and criteria: i) Quasar-like colors, All sky: Optical+MIR photometry using Gaia and unWISE (W1+W2); Southern hemisphere: additional selection based on optical (DES grizy), and NIR (VISTA VHS+Viking, 2MASS-JHK) colors, ii) Additional variability-based selection (from multi-epoch DES imaging), iii) All targets are robustly detected by Gaia with no proper motion is measured. In addition, the high-extinction regions near the Galactic plane, with E(B-V)>2, as well as the Magellanic clouds and M31 are excluded.

Summary: Variability-Selected AGN and Blazars: Confirmation and Characterization of Variability-Selected AGN, QSOs, and Blazars (objects without previous spectra)

Simplified description of selection criteria: Our parent sample comprises all ZTF objects with an AGN, QSO or blazar predicted label, that do not have a previous spectrum or AGN/QSO classification in a public catalog. We further restrict the sample with a magnitude limit in g < 19.5 for sources in the Eastern Galactic hemisphere and g < 20.5 for sources in the eROSITA-DE (Western Galactic hemisphere) to comply with a minimum S/N ratio of 3 on the continuum, for the respective bright and dark time conditions. We note that the majority of our ‘eROSITA-DE’ candidates have g<19.5 and thus could also be observed in bright time.
